It’s that time of the year again to celebrate one of my favourite passions in life, Star wars! I grew up with Star Wars and loved the movies and playing with the toys, and I love that I get to do it all again now with my kids. So the new Star Wars trailer just came out and as the big nerd I am, I watch it over and over again. And as I was doing that I got to thinking about the Force. For those who haven’t watched Star Wars, there is something called the Force, which Obi-wan described as “an energy field created by all living things”.
The Force In Star Wars
Well in Dentistry we use Orthodontic Forces to move teeth when we straighten someone’s smile. So in Star Wars there is the light side of the Force, which is the side of the noble and good, like Luke Skywalker and Yoda from the original Trilogy and Rey from the new Star Wars movies. And of
course, there is the Dark side of the force, which is the side of corruption and
evil like Darth Vader and Kylo Ren.
The Two Sides Of The Orthodontic Force
Well in Orthodontics we have two main methods or types of Forces we can use to straighten your teeth and achieve your beautiful smile. One way we move teeth is with Traditional braces, which typically take about 2 to 5
years depending on the complexity of the treatment. At our office we use the
Fastbraces® System which allows us to move teeth more safely and efficiently
due to the design of the wire and brackets and the light forces they deliver.
The FastBraces Difference
In traditional braces we have to use a series of light wires to align the teeth first and then once they are aligned we use a heavier thicker wire to start aligning the roots. With the Fastbraces® system there is only one wire which has the same diameter as the heavier wires used in traditional orthodontics , but it is engineered to be flexible and apply light forces where it needs to so that we can move teeth much more efficiently and safely than ever before.
That combined with the specially designed bracket, we typically cut treatment times in half. In fact most patients are done treatments in 6 months to a year, and some as little as 12 weeks. Obviously this varies based on difficulty of case and patient cooperation, but hey half the time than normal braces is always good, and the best part is, it costs about the same or less than traditional braces!
Invisalign Invisible Braces
The other way we straighten teeth is with Aligners which are a series of Trays that are specially engineered to apply different forces to your teeth with each aligner. Each Aligner you wear will apply specific forces to move specific teeth and each aligner gets you closer and closer to your ideal result. The trays come in and out of your mouth, so they can be removed when needed, and when you have to eat or brush your teeth. The biggest problem is, you do have to wear them for your teeth to move. Not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign Aligners, also known as invisible braces, but it is a great alternative for those who do not want to wear braces.
