Periodontics in Bradford

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that studies gum disease, support structures around the teeth and conditions that affect the teeth.

Periodontists are specialists who are experts in the above areas and they are also trained in the process of dental implants. This involves the planning, placement and maintenance of the implants and they specialize specifically in this area.

Periodontics focuses on the treatment of the gums, tissue and bone that support the teeth.Periodontics sometimes uses the Perio Protect method (an approved device that fits over the teeth) to treat chronic infections by administering dentist or doctor prescribed medication in the exact place and amount that is needed.

Periodontics deals with root canals which is the removal of infected, injured or dead pulp from the tooth. The dentist would rather do the root canal than have anyone lose a tooth. Dentists make the root canal process as comfortable and painless as possible.

The removal of wisdom teeth is a large part of periodontics as most people do not have enough room in their mouth to keep the wisdom teeth. The removal of these teeth allows the other teeth enough room to grow in straight, strong and healthy and without growing into the roots of other teeth. Periodontic treatments, whatever they are, will be closely followed by the dentist until the problem is corrected.

The periodontist screens for and treats gingivitis which is plaque and byproducts of plaque that irritate the gums and makes them very tender, inflamed and sometimes makes them bleed. It is very important to have regular dental checkups and have plaque removed before it can cause problems. This is done by periodontal screening twice a year and, if necessary, x-rays of the gums.

Periodontics is the process of screening teeth and gums and of teaching people how to care for their teeth at home. It also teaches the proper method of brushing and flossing and teaches you how to know when it is time to purchase a new toothbrush.

Good dental hygiene is a family affair and needs to be taught and practiced by everyone to ensure that your teeth last you for your lifetime. Periodontics will take care of impacted teeth and diseased gums.

It is very important to teach children all about preventative dental care so that they will be comfortable when visiting the dentist and not have stress or fear when a problem with their teeth is discovered. Periodontics can become a fascinating area for children to explore when they see their parents taking care of their teeth and not being afraid to visit the dentist.

Periodontics can involve what is called a ‘Frenectomy’. There is a small tissue band inside the upper and lower lip which is usually away from the teeth. Sometimes, though, it is very close to the teeth and the simple act of talking can cause it to pull away and harm the tissue around the teeth. This treatment is a simple release of the tissue so that it no longer pulls on the tissue around the teeth.

Periodontics can also involve crown lengthening before crowns. This increases the amount of tooth that is above the gums to allow the crowns to fit properly. This is done by removing some bone and gum tissue around each tooth.

Dental procedures will sometimes involve grafting for periodontal defects. Bone loss can occur anywhere in the mouth or it can be around only one tooth. Bone around the root of a tooth will not grow back. Therefore, a bone graft will be performed to fill the defect in the tooth.

Remember to keep having regular checkups to avoid having some of these defects and infections in your mouth.
