According to NIH.gov, “Tooth decay is a result of an infection with certain types of bacteria that use sugars in food to make acids. Over time, these acids can make a cavity in the tooth.”
Sticky Spots Turn into Cavities
I love it when things can be explained simply. This How Stuff Works article is a good one. There are more than one hundred different bacteria contained in your mouth. These bacteria work with the sugars in foods and create acid that slowly wears away the enamel of your teeth. As a dentist, it’s my job to look for spots in your mouth where the enamel is starting to show wear. Those “sticky” spots could potentially become cavities. Rebuilding your enamel is possible. Keeping your mouth clean by brushing keeps the acid off your teeth and out of your saliva. This helps. But, cavities still happen. A cavity is permanent damage to the enamel of your tooth and must be filled by a dentist in order to prevent further damage to the nerve.… If damage continues, a root canal will be required.
We Are Here for You
There are circumstances that stop people from making a dental appointment, like lack of dental benefits and the financial burden that ensues. For the most part, dental appointments are avoided because of anxiety. Our office and staff work very hard to make sure you feel comfortable. In fact, on your first visit, we will give you a personal tour of our office. You will meet me and the staff. You don’t even have to have any “work” done that day. We just want you to know that we are here to help you keep your smile in top shape. ~Dr. Chai (a.k.a. Dr. Tooth!)
