Back to the Books

With summer winding down at the end of this month, it’s just about time for the kids to hit the books as they head back to school.

We can all get pretty relaxed during the summer in regard to our everyday habits, whether it’s eating healthy food or brushing our teeth—especially the kids.

Not only that, but kids grow like crazy and may experience growth spurts during the summer due to their bodies being so active. All this activity stimulates growth all over their bodies, which includes their mouths and  jaws.

That’s why this is a great time to get your kids scheduled for a dental exam, before their schedules become too busy to take time off from school.

Another Good Reason

Getting your kids into the dentist before school starts is a healthy preventative measure for their oral health and for detecting tooth decay early.

In fact, a Canadian Health Measures Survey reported that over 45 percent of six- to eleven-year-old children missed school or other normal activities in the space of one year due to oral health issues.

Checklist

Here are some great guidelines to follow to help you prepare for your children’s dental exams:

  • Make a schedule for the upcoming year with your dentist—this way, you’ll know when to work around your child’s school schedule and activities.
  • Purchase a new toothbrush while you’re out shopping for school supplies and new clothes. Remember to replace your toothbrush every three months (or immediately following an illness).
  • Watch your children while they brush their teeth to make sure they are brushing for two minutes twice a day, as well as flossing. If you take the time to help them now, by the time school starts, it’ll be second nature to them.
  • Prepare a healthy shopping list for school lunches or after-school snacks that includes whole fruits, vegetables, and cheeses. Avoid foods like raisins, caramels, and lollipops that can stay in kids’ mouths for a long time.

Make sure your kids are set up for success this coming school year with an A+ on their dental exams.
