• EMG – This technology tests muscle activity in the head and neck area. It measures imbalances in muscle activity or excess and abnormal muscle activity, and can assist in the diagnosis of a muscle and facial imbalance which is often associated with jaw joint pathology (TMD).
• Energex– this is Pulsed Radio frequency Tissue Stimulation system used for the treatment of TMJ related pain and inflammation. The in-office Energex treatment is non-invasive and can substantially reduce pain and improve symptoms rapidly. Each treatment visit takes only a matter of minutes.
• Intraoral camera– special camera that allows us to take up close pictures of your teeth. They can aid in diagnose and help us document our findings. It often helps with patient understanding of their problems and helps address insurance inquiries as well.
• Jaw Tracker– equipment used to detect a suspected jaw problem. It literally maps out jaw movements and based on the findings, it can help with the diagnosis of a jaw problem (TMD).
• Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA) – is a device that measures the vibrations (the precursor to sound) in the jaw joints during normal opening and closing. Abnormal vibrations can indicate jaw joint pathology (TMD) and help us formulate a diagnosis of a jaw joint disorder. It can also aid in early diagnosis of the problem and is a great screening device for Jaw Joint disorders.
• Lasers (diode, cold laser)– laser technology is used to enhance patient treatment and experience. They are used in oral surgery and to speed up the tissue healing process.
  • Cold-pulsed laser: used on tissue, it does not generate much heat despite the amount of energy it produces. Unlike the diode laser, this is not a cutting laser. It is a healing laser that biostimulates your cells to turnover quicker thus allowing you to heal faster. It is used after extractions and surgeries as well as root canal therapy to expediate healing and reduce discomfort and risk of complications. It is also used in the treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD) and pain patients as it greatly reduces muscle inflammation, and promotes healing of the muscles, tendons, ligaments.
  • Diode laser. This laser is set at a particular wave length to help perform tissue surgery. Before this laser technology was available, almost all tissue surgery was either done by a scalpel (blade) or by electro-surgery. Scalpel surgery has many drawbacks, of which Pain and bleeding stand out. Electro-surgery took care of the bleeding problem, but pain was still a huge issue and it is limited in areas of use due to higher risk of scar tissue formation and unpredictable tissue healing. The Diode laser has a fine fibre-optic tip which allows for more fine control, and allows tissue surgery to be performed with minimal bleeding and less discomfort. It can be used for gum surgery, to remove excess tissue growths, biopsies, frenectomies, correction of tongue tie, and can be used for treatment of advanced gum disease. Amazingly, it also treats cold sores and ulcers, while preventing their reforming in the exact same spot that was treated. Tissues like this laser, and healing times are generally reduced. Because the laser kills off viruses and bacteria, and at the same time bio-stimulates healing cells, the tissue is often much healthier after use of this diode laser.
  • Diagnodent – is a Cavity detection laser. This laser is programmed to pick up the wavelength of bacteria in teeth. In other words, if you tooth has a bacteria caused cavity, it will detect it. It will indicate when it has found something by sound and by numerical number. The louder the sound and number, the bigger the cavity. This laser has improved the detection of cavities, particularly early cavities and have had over a 90% accuracy level. Combining this laser with clinical diagnosis has eliminated the guesswork on borderline small cavities and when or when not to treat them. By finding cavities at the earliest stages, more tooth structure is conserved, thus greatly improving the longevity of teeth. As a result of using this laser, we are finding that fewer root canals are required, as instead of waiting for the cavity to show up on an x-ray (which by then may be too late), we can catch the cavity when smaller and treat the problem before it gets too big and it’s too late. Less numbing is required as well. When cavities are identified early, often times numbing of teeth is not required. So instead of walking around with your mouth numbed for half the day after your dental visit, you can actually go home and eat and enjoy the rest of the day without the fat lip!
• Panorex CMT Tomograph– this is very special piece of x-ray equipment that allows the taking of specialized x-rays to aid in the diagnosis and assessment of conditions that normal dental x-rays will not allow. One type of x-ray is a Panoramic. This is a common x-ray that gives a general overview of how teeth are coming in including baby teeth and wisdom teeth. It also is used for general treatment planning as it gives a radiographic picture of the whole mouth and combined with other records is a very useful tool for helping to formulate what would work best for a patient’s mouth. Another type, Cephs, are used most commonly for Orthodontic evaluations. This Tomograph unit also allows image to be taken of: jaw joints to aid in our diagnosis of jaw joint pathology or ailments, sinuses to evaluate if there is bacteria in the sinus or a physical obstructions that is affecting airway and ability to breathe, and jaw bones to help evaluate if a patient is a candidate for implants.
• Pharyngometer / Rhinometer– this is a very interesting piece of equipment that uses sound-waves, like bat sonar, to map out obstructions that may occur during breathing through nose and mouth. Through this, we can identify possible problems and make the appropriate suggestions and/or referrals. This is a great screening device for the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring as it helps to identify where the obstruction is coming from and to determine suitability of candidate for an Oral Appliance to treat Sleep apnea or snoring.
• T-scan– is used for fine tuning complex bite issues. Instead of using the usual bite paper, a computerized bite paper is used to actually map out which tooth is actually hitting first and how hard. It allows for proper pinpoint adjustments. This is especially useful for full mouth cases where everything is new in the mouth.
• Ultrasound– used in the treatment of muscle inflammation and is offered to our TMD and headache patients to reduce their pain.
• Velscope – This oral cancer screening device has been approved by the World Health Organization in the early detection and screening of oral cancer lesions. Unfortunately oral cancer rates are rising, and often times by the time it is visually found in the mouth, the cancer is already in advanced stages. Even scarier is that it’s not just the smokers that get it – 2 people die every day in Canada from mouth Cancer. The rate of young women getting Oral cancer is on the rise, and almost everyone can be at risk. The prevalence of Oral cancer is higher than Ovarian cancer. So just like when women go for their annual pap smear and breast exam, or men for their prostate exam, an oral cancer screening should be performed annually. The good news it is much less invasive as it uses special fluorescence technology to screen for abnormalities and is no more invasive than a regular dental check exam. Just like with any cancer, if you catch it early, it is more treatable and the survivability rate greatly increases. When you catch it late, the treatment is usually more aggressive and your survivability rate decreases. This is why we purchased this machine as it can actually pick up abnormal tissue BEFORE a patient can detect a cancerous or suspicious lesion with the naked eye. • The Wand – this is a special computerized small lightweight handpiece that resembles a pen and is an alternative to how we deliver the numbing agent when “freezing” your teeth. It allows us to numb your teeth in an almost “painless” and much more comfortable manner. The computer controlled system allows for an even-flow delivery of anesthetic in a very comfortable, non-threatening manner. It eliminates the “bee sting” effect – the painful consequence from a surge of fluid into a confined tissue area. Even more, certain injections made possible with the Wand minimize the unnecessary numbness of the tongue, cheek, and face. Imagine leaving the dentist’s office without a “fat lip!”
